Montgomery, Dr.
William S. Who for 38 years practiced medicine with a bottomless well of
caring and concern for his patients in Newburgh, NY, died on September
18, 2010 in St. Luke's Hospital. He was born on March 17, 1923, son of
Charles O. Montgomery and Ethel McCullough Montgomery. Bill was
predeceased by his parents, and by his sister, Margaret Higgins and
daughter, Janet Ellen Montgomery. Bill grew up in Newburgh, where he met
Gloria (Camp) Montgomery, his high school sweetheart, wife of 65 years
and mother of his five daughters. Dr. Montgomery was a 1943 graduate of
Colgate University and he served in the U.S. Army in WWII. He went on to
graduate from Cornell University Medical College and then began his
family medicine practice in Newburgh in 1949. He had a particular
interest in Diabetes and went on to serve a clinical fellowship in
Diabetes at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He
served as a combat physician in the Korean War, as a member of the
M*A*S*H 4055th Unit, the front of the 4077th Unit of book, movie and
television fame. He was a close friend of Richard Hawkeye Hooker, the
author, but was always modest about his service with the celebrated
medical team and insisted he was no one famous. He returned to Newburgh
to continue his practice and raise his family. In 1960, he founded the
Orange County Diabetes Association for diabetics and parents of
diabetics and organized and frequently lectured at meetings. He served
as Chief of Staff at St. Luke's Hospital, President of the Orange County
Medical Society and as delegate to the New York Medical Society for many
years. He was on the Coordinating Committee for Camp NYDA (New York
Diabetes Association) and delighted in the positive and enjoyable
experiences and memories he helped create for juvenile diabetics. He was
a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, a Charter Fellow of
the College of American Family Physicians and a Clinical Fellow of the
New York Diabetes Association. Bill Montgomery was a lifelong member of
Grace United Methodist Church in Newburgh and served as Trustee and as
Vice Chairman of the Administrative Board. His faith sustained him
through life's trials and tribulations. Upon retiring in 1986, he was
able to more fully enjoy his passion for the game of golf which he never
fully conquered but always enjoyed. He took advantage of some of his
newly found spare time to seek out specialty hardwoods and use his
healing and skilled hands to craft a variety of bowls, cheeseboards,
quilt stands and unique pieces of furniture. Bill Montgomery leaves
behind a rich legacy of devotion and service to family, friends,
patients, community and church. To his family, he will be remembered as
a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, always ready and available
with love and the best advice and support. He loved to teach and share
through doing and delighted in planning outings, adventures and
vacations with his wife and girls. To his friends, he had infectious
laughter and rarely lacked for wit or acts of generosity and
congeniality. To his many patients, his community and church, he was a
pillar of reassurance and strength, steadfastly and confidently caring
for them, helping whenever and however he could. He took great pride in
being the doc for so many, but felt humbled and immensely privileged to
have been invited and welcomed into the lives of so many people. In
addition to his wife, Gloria, he is survived by his daughters and their
husbands: Barbara Hider and Jeffrey Hider of Severna Park, MD, Cheryl
Wherry and James Wherry of New Paltz, Margaret L. Montgomery and Bill
Fogg of Jericho, VT, Susan Sinclair and Steven Sinclair of East
Montpelier, VT; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren (and more
on the way) and nephew, Will Higgins. A memorial service will be held at
